But before we throw up our hands in frustration, the screen freezes and two of the characters explain to us what the hell they’re talking about. Characters speaking directly to us is just one of the ways that CORPSE RUN tells its story.

This group is plugged in. They live in Los Angeles, they pursue their dreams in the daytime–singer, actress, investor, management trainee–but they only feel alive when they gather with each other (and beer, junk food, extremely fast computers) to defeat other teams in an online universe. They are the self-described “second best team online.”

An Introduction and What I Plan To See

Posted by Random Curiosity

Hello, my name is David. I attended my first Cinequest in 2003. If my finger-counting skills are correct, this year will be my seventh festival.

One of my favorite parts of CQ happens weeks before Opening Night, when the organizers release the official program. As soon as the printed version hits the newsstands, I grab a copy so I can study and mark it up. With so many enticing movies to choose from and so few hours in which to watch them, the selection process is intense. When I’m done, I have a list of the Top 10 films I plan to see. (Hint: One of the films is Corpse Run, the subject of yesterday’s 5Q interview.)

Before I go, I wanted to encourage everyone who hasn’t done so already to consider volunteering. This will be my fourth year helping out. I can say with certainty that it’s a fun and inexpensive way to enrich your festival experience.

1Q: Tell us a little about the origins of Corpse Run, from writing to financing.

The original script of Corpse Run was very simple; I was trying to break into acting and wanted to write something I could make for about 10 grand, so I wrote a story about three friends who played video games all day and talked politics. The whole point of the script was that we take ourselves too seriously and don’t really have a right to our opinions… Simply stated, opinions are cheap, but action is tough! Over the next year I expanded the script, then I got involved in Producing, Assistant Directing and Cinematography. A couple years later I came back to the script and decided to rewrite the thing as if I had 5 million dollars. I expanded the story to take place in an internet café, and added the character of Liberty (played by Brea Grant). Liberty just made the script work. Instead of being a story about video games, it turned into a story about the “Video Game Generation.” In the end, we didn’t have five million dollars! Our production costs were under $100k easily, so it was kinda insane, but had I not tried to write a script that had a real budget, it would have never been the movie it is. Read more
