Festival Fanatic grew out of my own need (compulsion?) to see as many films at Cinequest as possible. (The oldest Cinequest shirt I’ve got is from 1997, but I think that was my third or fourth. I kept going until we moved in 2007.) As a programmer, I saw that a computer could automate the mechanical stuff that I’d do: prioritize my films, then build a schedule by trying to fit in the higher-priority films first.
Over the course of a couple of years, this programming task became a fun way to try out a new programming language – the current incarnation started as a way to learn the Ruby language and the Rails web-programming framework, just before our move to Portland for my first Portland International Film Festival in 2007 – only I and a few of my new Portland friends used it for that festival, but Portland’s 2009 festival is just finishing up this weekend, and almost 40 people have given it a try this year. Cinequest has announced the official schedule of this year’s festival’s screenings and related events. We’ll spare you any further commentary because, if you’re like us, you’re anxious to begin digging into this information and to work out your own timetable with respect to the films you need to see.
